Batch converter for Works WPS format to Word 2007/2010 DOCX format

I was asked to produce a batch converter for Works WPS format documents to DOCX. The resulting utility is available as an add-in for Word 2007/2010 which you can download via this link or from the downloads page of this site. Extract the template from the zip file and save it in the Word startup folder, which by default can be located as a hidden folder at the following address - %appdata%\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP. Copy and paste or type this string into your Explorer or Browser address bar.

The add-in will place a button on the add-ins tab. The add-ins tab is only displayed when there are add-ins present.

Note:

I would strongly recommend backing up the hard drive before running this utility - particularly if you intend to run it on the full content of the drive.

When clicked the macro will close any open documents, giving the option to save them:

The buttons there are self evident, Clicking Cancel quits the macro.

Any other button and the macro prompts for a choice of whether or not to retain the WPS files. If at all in doubt, choose the option to retain them. You can always delete them later.

The macro then prompts for the start folder containing the files. The macro will look in the selected folder and any sub folder, including the root folder of the drive. This will result in the macro searching the complete content of the hard drive which can take a long time to process, so if you choose the root of a drive you will be asked to confirm your intention:

If you choose Yes the macro will then proceed to search and open any Works WPS format documents it finds, which it will either save as a Word Document, retaining the WPS file in the same folder, or it will convert the file to DOCX format replacing the original WPS format.  On a large hard drive the macro will take some time to run and the Word screen may go blank during the process.

If you choose No the function will close to the same dialog as shown earlier in the third illustration.

Note:

The add-in requires the Works converter to be installed prior to running the macro. Word 2007/2010 come with a converter that will open recent versions of Works WPS format. Older Works file versions require earlier converters which you can download from the downloads page of this site.
